2014-2015 School Year
2012-2013 School Year
Welcome to Room 15's Adventure!
It will be another amazing year collaborating with many educational professionals to facilitate student learning. By combining all the Special ED services, Emwave and iPad technologies, mindful lessons and academic instruction, we are able to integrate social emotional learning, relaxation & self regulation/awareness skills to educate the whole child all day long. We strive to provide our children with opportunities & activities that allow and encourage their aptitudes( strengths/talents) to emerge and grow in a safe, friendly calm community environment.
Our goals are to teach the students how to become thoughtful, curious, self- confident & engaged independent thinkers, problem solvers and learners . To accomplish this I will be collaborating with an Occupational Therapist & integrating EMWAVE technology in an hour long class called Body and Breath to teach body awareness and self calming skills. In addition, we are again participating in BAWSI, a Bay Area organization that focusses on team building activities through physical sports and activities. During Pirate Club, I will again team teach with a SLP & ABA specialist and together we will teach the children Social Thinking ® skills & strategies to defeat the team of Unthinkables®. Through out the day these concepts & skills are woven into the academics. Finally, The students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge and learn with our class set of iPADS! This amazing device has been a transformative addition to a balanced program to empower children with Autism.
Mindful Attention and Learning
Many students in room 15 struggle with attending and regulating their bodies, emotions and behaviors. Students can be taught to become more attentive & self-regulated learners. But strategies and practice is needed to help them understand their ability to aim their attention in concrete ways . It is our hope that they learn these strategies and practice focussing their attention by the time they leave Room 15 when the unique push in services we provide stop . These mindful exercises Emwaves and the Pirate Club Social Emotional Learning ( SEL) aim to assist the children to do just this. We are currently working on focussing our attention by listening to sounds , watching an object , sensing our bodies or noticing our thoughts without judgement and learning to pause before we respond rather than react . Just like an archer who aims at a target , we can aim our attention which in turn will help the children develop the self awareness and capacity to attend longer and on purpose. The OT also works on focussed attention with regard to body movements, coordination, balance, fine and gross motor skills
A Little About Me
2014-2015 begins my 19th year as a Specialist in Education in the Cambrian SD! I have been a Special educator for 27 years. I am highly qualified and hold multiple credentials but specialize working with grades 3-5 children with Autism where I also hold a credential in Autism. I absolutely love the aptitudes & talents of these children and have grown as a teacher and human being knowing these young people & families. I value the team effort of our unique program which I helped create and maintain. I am blessed to work for a forward thinking SD who support my efforts.
I am married and have two grown sons. I am a grandmother and have two granddaughters, an adorable yet obnoxious cat and consider myself a learner. I am currently in a year long certificated program to teach Mindful lessons to children in schools. I read, follow educational policy blogs and am an active member in many teacher/tech groups. I maintain a garden, love crafts when I find time. I live in a home we built nestled in the Redwoods which I consider my personal refuge, a place of rest, rejuventaion and reflection. The commute is long but beautiful.
